Background

Berkeley Design Technology, Inc. (BDTI) is a technical services and software company focused on digital signal processing (DSP) implementation technology. Founded by U.C. Berkeley faculty and researchers in 1991, the company today serves a worldwide customer base spanning the semiconductor, electronic systems, electronic design automation, and investment communities.

BDTI helps companies develop, select, and use digital signal processing technology to meet key business objectives. BDTI's focus is on analysis, benchmarking, evaluation, and development of technology used to implement digital signal processing applications. Specifically, we:

  • Perform in-depth technical evaluations of DSPs and microprocessors.
  • Design and implement benchmarking methodologies for processors and tools.
  • Analyze signal processing algorithms and applications.
  • Evaluate design tools and advise on tool selection and design methodologies.
  • Develop specifications and recommendations for software, processors, and tools.
  • Develop optimized application software.
  • Publish technical reports and books on digital signal processing technology, including Buyer's Guide to DSP Processors, Inside reports, and DSP Processor Fundamentals.

The Job

We are seeking an experienced, energetic, and talented manager to lead, develop and manage our technical team. The ideal candidate will have experience as an individual contributor and manager of highly skilled professionals in:

  • Electronic component, system, or software engineering
  • Technology analysis and evaluation
  • Consulting or other professional services

Leadership and development of the technical team is one of the most important functions of this position. In addition, the ability to relate and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with clients, prospects, and non-technical staff; and to partner with others on key marketing and business development initiatives is critical for success.

In this position, your responsibilities may include:

  • People Management
    • Resource planning, recruiting, hiring
    • Supervision (about 6 direct reports initially)
    • Performance evaluation and professional development planning for technical staff
    • Team building
    • Organization development
  • Project Management
    • Requirements analysis, estimates, quotations, and proposals
    • Project scheduling and management
    • Evaluation of business opportunities
  • Client Interaction
    • Develop relationships with new key customers
    • Manage ongoing relationships with key customers
    • Coach technical staff to strengthen customer interaction skills
  • Technical Contributions
    • Analysis of digital signal processing technology
    • Review and contribution to technical report writing
    • Definition and implementation of software development processes
  • Information Technology
    • Oversee the company's IT resources
    • Plan, budget, and oversee the implementation of IT upgrades
    • Manage staff and/or contract system administrators

You will have the opportunity to work with a first-rate technical team, gain exposure to some of the hottest new technology under development (often years before public release), and have a hand in influencing the design of future generations of processors, tools, and systems.

You must have 3-5 years of experience managing engineers in one or more of the following fields:

  • Electronic component, system, or software engineering
  • Technology analysis and evaluation
  • Consulting or other professional services

If, in addition, you have most of the following, we want to hear from you:

  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong organizing skills honed managing projects in deadline/quality-driven environments.
  • A successful record of juggling multiple assignments, adapting to fast-changing circumstances, and to doing what it takes to get the job done.
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, the following technologies:
    • Digital signal processing
    • Microprocessors
    • Design tools and methodologies
    • Performance analysis and benchmarking

This position is available in Oakland, CA, near Lake Merritt and public transportation. The San Francisco Bay Area provides a high quality of life with easy access to cultural attractions and outdoor activities.
