Position Available: DSP Software Engineer

The Company

BDTI is a small company that has a big impact on the electronics industry.

BDTI provides independent, hands-on analysis and benchmarking of processors and other technology for embedded processing applications—especially digital-signal-processing-based applications. To quote the Vice President of Engineering of a top-10 semiconductor company, “BDTI’s benchmarks and analysis are the gold standard.”

BDTI also provides specialized engineering services to help our clients build leading-edge products. We focus on ultra-high-performance software for applications like audio, video, and wireless communication. Recently, we have begun to focus on computer vision applications.

At BDTI, engineers have the opportunity to influence the direction of the industry—BDTI’s analysis often drives key business decisions by companies that make electronic systems, chips, tools, and algorithms. And at BDTI, engineers have the opportunity to do challenging, hands-on work with an exceptionally wide range of embedded processors, tools, and applications. Check out the BDTI customer list and you will see many leading-edge companies developing next generation video, audio, multimedia and other DSP-centric technologies where squeezing the maximum performance from a processor is critical.

The company was founded in 1991 by U.C. Berkeley faculty and researchers.

The Job

We are seeking a self-starter and team player with strengths in several of the following areas:

  • In-depth knowledge of the architecture and instruction set of one or more processors (CPUs, DSPs, MCUs, etc.)
  • Coding and optimization skills in both C and assembly language
  • Knowledge of one or more digital signal processing application areas (e.g., video, computer vision, audio)
  • Knowledge of FPGA design
  • Analytical skills
  • Written and oral communications skills
  • Organizing skills
  • An ability and willingness to juggle multiple assignments, adapt to fast-changing circumstances, and do what it takes to get the job done

In this position, your responsibilities will include the definition, implementation, optimization, and evaluation of a variety of signal processing algorithms; these may be applications used in products or benchmarks used to compare and analyze DSP-oriented processors. The types of algorithms may include:

  • Video compression algorithms (including proprietary and standards such as H.264)
  • Computer vision / video analytics algorithms
  • Audio coding algorithms (including proprietary and standards such as MP3)
  • DSP kernel algorithms (FIR/IIR filters, FFTs, DCTs, etc.)
  • Communications transceivers (such as OFDM)
  • A variety of other DSP-intensive algorithms

In addition to design, implementation, and evaluation of algorithms, you will perform analysis to explain the strengths and weaknesses of processors and tools. Additionally you will advise our clients on how to improve their architectures, tools, algorithms, and software.

Some of the unique opportunities provided by this position include:

  • Becoming an expert on a wide range of signal-processing architectures, tools, and application
  • Working on a wide variety of assignments—not just the same project month after month
  • Being exposed to cutting-edge technologies, often months or even years before they are publicly introduced
  • Influencing the direction of future processors and tools by providing product designers with feedback on their products' strengths and weaknesses
  • Interacting with senior technical and business people (such as chief architects and marketing directors) at many of the most important technology companies worldwide
  • Working with top-notch colleagues

To be successful in this position, you must be able to manage multiple concurrent assignments with multiple deadlines.

Applicants must have or be able to obtain the legal right to work in the U.S. BDTI will assist qualified candidates with the visa application process.
